I'm so tired of hearing about the whole used games debate. I'm tired of hearing game developers bitch and whine about the buying and selling of used games. You want people to stop buying and selling used games? Here's a few suggestions
1. Go completely over to digital distribution. Then we can't rid ourselves of the pieces of shit that we bought on impulse (I can think of quite a few XBLA pieces of shit I bought I'd have loved to have been able to trade in)and stop overcharging for DLC and for shit that should have been on the disc to begin with (RE Versus, Horse Armor, etc).
2. Lower the prices of your fucking games. $60 is too fucking expensive in this economy for a new game that can be beaten in no time and offers either no multiplayer or bland multiplayer. I can't tell you the number of games I've bought for the 360 and PS3 that I've played and beaten in no time and really regretted spending $60 for them. For the most part, there are few games that are actually worth $60. If you price your games even $10 less, more copies would be sold.
3. Quit cozying up with Gamestop. This is the same chain that all the developers and publishers bitch about and then the stupid motherfuckers give out demo exclusivity to Gamestop, free add-ons, and other incentives to purchase there. In any normal business scenario, would you let someone who supposedly took profits away from you (used games) do your selling for you? I didn't think so. As much as I hate WalMart (and goddamn I do hate them), game developers and publishers should cozy up to them. They don't sell used games and would probably give up valuable shelf space for some of the publishers' games to get some of the free bonuses to drive even more customers to their store.
4. You want impulse buyers? Give us impulse pricing. Apple's App Store is the prime example of this. Why the fuck does Scrabble cost $4.99 on the IPhone and double that for 360 and PS3 when the only added advantage in my mind is some better form of online play and graphics. The beauty of Apple's App Store is the pricing tier. Why should I spend $10 on a game for the 360 or PS3 when I can buy a game for a buck off the App store that's just as good and portable to boot. There are far too many overpriced titles from developers on the XBLA and PSN. Lower more things to $5 and make more money. $5 is a sweet spot for downloadable games for the PS3 and 360. I have felt better about my purchases for my IPhone and had just as much fun with the games as I've had with any $60 title for one of the next gen systems.
5. Give us more free shit when we spend $60 on your game. Give us maps, extra guns, extra costumes or uniforms. Give us value that we won't get in a used game.
I know this is old and tired, but let's apply the developers and publishers' arguments to other industries.
You don't like the car you bought, fuck it, no used car sales anymore. Keep the motherfucker till it breaks down.
You finished reading a book, put it back on the shelf. Done watching a movie, put it up as well, and by the way, no letting your friends borrow that same book or movie, because that takes money away from the person who created it.
Got old clothes that you've outgrown? Burn em then trash the embers. Forget donating to a homeless shelter or Goodwill. That takes money away fro the designer and store that sold you the clothes.
And this note is to so called gaming journalists who decry used game sales as well. When you motherfuckers actually start buying games like the people who consume your content instead of getting everything for free, then we'll start listening to your tired ass arguments about used games again.
digg me!!
