The Battle over Proposition 8 will head to Washington

The Ban on Proposition 8 trial in California appears to be headed to the US Supreme Court no matter what happens in California.  I'm hopeful that both rulings come out favorably and that the ban on Gay Marriage is overturned and spiteful laws like Proposition 8 are banned forever.   It's not the government's place to say who can and who can't get married at least in my opinion.   If conservatives and religious leaders are so against gay marriage, then what's so wrong with allowing civil unions?  I know that doesn't go far enough for either side, but in my opinion, it would be a good start.  I'm not quite sure why conservatives and religious leaders feel so threatened by the thought of gay marriage and civil unions.  Their arguments about moral fibers and injustices hold no water at least as far as I'm concerned.
