Interview with Spaz

If you've spent any time at all listening to Kidd Chris at any point over the last couple of years, then chances are good that you know my next interview for the blog, Spaz.  I can remember the first time I heard Spaz during the intern challenge and the laughs continued when Jess was introduced and during the now infamous Macho Man bit.  Spaz added quite a bit to the show (no matter what he says over the course of this interview), and I've always enjoyed hearing his stuff.  I cannot tell you how many times I've listened to Macho Man break up with Jess and each time I laugh even more.  That's the thing with Spaz, he's always willing to help out and take one for the team, and has produced many cringe worthy moments as well, which we all know makes for great radio.  He and Cheeseburger host a show on kiddshow.com at times and Spaz is now infamous for his prank phone calls to various radio stations around the country where he tries to mention Kidd Chris or just be completely off the wall.  I enjoyed the calls when Chris first started playing them during the internet show and was really glad to hear he's involved again.  Seriously, some radio station out there needs to give Spaz and his gold a home at some point.   Here's my interview with Spaz uncut and uncensored.  Thanks again Spaz for doing it and as a reminder, you can head over to http://www.thespazshow.com/ and listen to and watch quite a few of Spaz's calls to stations around the country.  Here's the interview and thanks again Spaz for doing it!!

1. Tell us about Spaz before he came under the wing of one Christopher Derek Foley aka Kidd Chris aka The Big Dang Dude aka Slammer C and aka Cobra

In 8th grade, I stumbled upon Howard Stern, and immediately became hooked. I listened everyday, and when I finally was able to take Radio Broadcasting as a senior in High School, I did. I was the David Silver of Atlantic City High School. Instead of going to lunch, I did a daily show on 88.9 WAJM . No one could hear it, but I would have my girlfriend call in and request songs and have them cued up to play. I loved it. I went to college and did a show three days a week at the college station (91.7 WLFR). I used to force my fraternities pledges to call in and tell me how much they loved my show. By the time I was a junior, I had already fulfilled my internship credits when I applied for an internship with Kidd Chris. I got the "internship", lied to management and told them I'd be getting credits, dropped out of school (I graduated 2 years later) and began supplying gold for Cobra.

2. Your stint as an intern on the Kidd Chris Show was legendary with the Jess Stories, Macho Man breaking up with Jess, and the intern challenge stuff. What was your favorite?

None of it. I sucked on the air. It was the first time I was on the radio, and people could actually hear me. Chris was extremely intimidating to me, and still is to this day. It's hard to bust balls with people who are comically way out of your league. I would shake when I walked in the studio, I would stutter and stammer like an idiot, and all the bits I recorded involved me calling people the N-word or the C-word. The fun was off the air. Hanging in the office or in the studio during commercial breaks, hanging after the show helping with bits and interviews, and just bullshitting with Chris and Thomas. No one really knows how much work Chris and Thomas put into the show after it's over. People think Chris signs off at 10AM and that's it, but in reality, they were at the station till 3 or 4 in the afternoon putting shit together for the next morning. I learned more about radio working for Chris during those 6 months, then I did studying it in high school and college for 6 years.

3. You've described it on the fiber optics, but what is it like to sit across from Cheeseburger for a broadcast?  What goes through your head when he comes out with some of the stuff that comes out of his mouth?

It's hard because Cheeseburger will talk your ear off when the mics are off, but once the mics are open, he clams up. I used to prep for the show, but now I think it's more interesting to hear him talk about what he wants to talk about. If he wants to sit and have dead air for 5 minutes, that's interesting to me. The only thought that runs through my head, is exactly how and when he will end my life.

4. Your calls to various radio stations were one of the best parts of the internet show and are fast becoming favorites on the KUFO show.  Run me through how you prep what stations to  call and how in the heck you come up with some of the stuff you say.  And by the way, congrats on getting a Knoxville, TN station.  It made me proud to be a Spaz and Kidd Chris fan.

Thanks Dave. The process is extremely boring. I just search for talk stations in different cities, pull up their internet stream, listen to what they are talking about, then fool the call screener. If you tell the screener you agree with the host, they'll go right to you. Usually, I write down the jist of what ignorant and homophobic comment I want to say so I know exactly what to hit them with. Then, when the host goes to me, I agree with them and start talking about the topic...then blindside them.

5. You're going to be a dad, will you teach your child to call into radio shows and say filthy things on the air and

Fortunately for me, this child is probably going to be black and not mine, so when I'm doing Top-40 Radio from Billings, Montana in three months, it won't really matter to me.

6. Will Cheeseburger be allowed within 50 miles of your child?

Of course, who else is going to babysit?

7. Who will drool more, Cheeseburger or your child?

The question isn't who will drool more Dave...it's who will be potty trained first. My moneys on the kid.

8.In true Kidd Chris fashion ala the Nicole Richie interview, do you have any questions for me?

Is it duck hunt?

Again, thanks to Spaz for allowing me to do an interview.  Here's hoping Spaz becomes more involved in the show and good luck in the job hunt.  It's a shame to see talent sitting on the sidelines.
