Reviewing E3 Clint Eastwood Style

A Small Review of E3 Clint Eastwood Style (The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly)

THE GOOD

God of War III PS3- The best just seems to be getting better.  I've watched the E3 demo countless times and each time I see new things that make March 10, 2010 so far away.  The game is flat out gorgeous and should be a fitting end to the story of Kratos (although I hope that this isn't the last game in the God of War storyline)

Uncharted 2 PS3-Naughty Dog seems to have done the unthinkable, added multiplayer that actually works to a game that's largely a single player experience.  They've pushed the PS3 to it's limits as far as graphics go and it appears that the story for the second game will be every bit as good as the story in the first game.  I've been truly excited about this game since I finished up the first game.  I hope that Uncharted 2 sells well this fall.

Alan Wake XBOX360-Looks to be along the lines of Resident Evil/Alone in the Dark.  The bad part, it appears that it's Spring 2010 for release.

Splinter Cell Conviction XBOX360- It's Sam Fisher, what else needs to be said?  SC is one of the best series in gaming and this one is exclusive to the 360.  I loved the Gameplay demo and hope it's out soon.

Crackdown 2 XBOX360- Even though it's not being developed by Realtime Worlds, it should still be a winner.

MGS Rising (multi)- It's going to be great to see a premier Kojima Franchise on the 360.

Assasin's Creed 2 (multi)- It appears that our favorite assassin will get some new weapons this time out.  I hope the gameplay isn't as repetitive.

Other good mentions- Brutal Legend, Mass Effect 2, Halo ODST, Halo Reach

THE BAD

The price of Sony's new PSPGO.  $249 is a ridiculous price and I cannot see how Sony figures they'll sell it at that price in this economy.  The PSPGo joins the PS3 in the category of "systems that are just too expensive".  I was really excited about the PSP Go, but once I saw the price I was let down.

No playable versions of several big games that are out in the fall

Final Fantasy XIV being PS3 exclusive- Square Enix needs subscribers from both the PC and 360 crowd as well.  I wonder how big of a money hat Sony gave them to get exclusivity on the PS3

Next to nothing put up on the PSN and XBL marketplaces as far as demos, etc go.  If this was supposed to be the year that E3 was back, no one told either marketplace.

THE UGLY

Nintendo's Press Conference- Short of a new Metroid game from Team Ninja and a SMG2 Trailer, Nintendo pretty much waved goodbye to their hardcore faithful and forged full steam ahead towards the casual audience.  Nintendo introduced the world to it's newest and perhaps most idiotic peripheral, the vitality sensor with little to no explanation of what it would do.  I'm just curious as to what Ninty is going to do when the casual crowd moves on to some new fad and sells their Wii's.  Nintendo again fails at E3.

The supposed price of Natal- According to the 1Up podcast, each of these units cost $400 to make and according to reports from the Seattle PI, it will cost consumers at the very least $200.  I can appreciate what it does, but at $200, NATAL will be FATAL for Microsoft.

Sony's Motion Controller- Looks like a sex toy.  Not interested in the least little bit.  As I said the other day, Microsoft and Sony should concentrate on games instead of hokey ass motion controllers and webcams.

Tony Hawk Ride- $120 to break my neck?  Where do I sign up?

DJ Hero- No playable version on the show floor and yet another $120 price tag supposedly.  I'm probably a bit biased because I'm not a fan of music games (I feel they're tired and overdone), but I just don't see this being as compelling as GH and RB or as much fun.

Beatles Rock Band- too expensive and not having the ability to import them into RB2 makes this ugly at least in my opinion.

Activision filing a legal suit to stop the release of Brutal Legend.  Activision is now the game company to hate (replacing EA in many's eyes) and they're not doing much to change it.

AWARDS

Game of Show- God of War III-hands down winner.  Nothing looked as good as God of War to me
Runners up- SC Conviction, Uncharted 2, Alan Wake

Developer of Show-Naughty Dog

Press Conference Winner- Microsoft

So there you have it, my wrapup of E3
