Maine joins Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Iowa in allowing same sex marriage and Vermont's new law takes effect in September New Hampshire is close to passing a similar bill as well allowing same sex marriage. By the time September rolls around, there will be 6 states out of 50 that allow Same Sex Marriage and that's roughly 12 percent of the US that allows equal rights not based on sexual orientation. There's a long ways to go but hopefully soon, those numbers will get higher. I still find it hard to believe that NY and California don't have a same sex marriage amendment and some of the smaller states have an agreement in place. I've received emails in the past to the blog asking why I care so much about same sex marriage since I'm heterosexual. I'll tell you why I care and why I'm a supporter of Same Sex Marriage: It's not right of the government to deny the right of marriage to tax paying citizens because they don't fit into the government's image of what marriage is supposed to be. We live in a country where a 50 percent divorce rate is perfectly acceptable. Worry about that, then worry about who can and who can't get married. To me our government screws up enough things on their own, why should we let marriage full under that umbrella as well?
